This is a quick “test colouring” of a panel in the new story, hence the sketchy Todger and background. It comes from the section that helps the narrative link directly from where I left off, “ancient Priapus” bit and all; that is, I’m not throwing away anything you’ve already seen during the chaotic narrative collapse that precipitated this hiatus 🙂
On other matters- WALKING DEAD SPOILER ALERT. If you haven’t watched the latest episode yet, go no further…
Another promo shot sort of thing.
I’m afraid at this exciting stage I’m having a bit of trouble finding stuff to post, because I’m basically just working on the relaunch episode and, y’know, spoilers. I don’t want to ruin it for the fanbase… both of them. Heh.
Alternatively to the last post, this might be the episode cover (first draft)…
Probably is. It’s a bit more cover-ish and story related, especially seeing as it’s got our new friends the um, the er… Blue Man Group… those guys, on it.
The lettering isn’t finalised, particularly the Lucy Lastique banner itself. I quite like this simple white font as it goes. Lucy maybe needs a new corporate-identity-branding-logo-thingy after all these years. Also, I seem to have lost the old font and I can’t remember what it was called 🙁
And yes, I did steal that face from another picture. I checked in the official Artist’s Rulebook, and stealing from yourself is allowed!
Might possibly be the episode cover, since it contains a shower scene. Or, might just be a picture of Lucy’s posterior. Either works for me 🙂
This one’s several things; a final “dress uniform” test, and a promo pic, and also I’ll probably use this shot of Lucy for the final panel of the relaunch episode, since that’s what I actually drew it for.
The dress and boots probably will have the colour toned down, since they probably should be more “black with just a hint of coloured highlights”, rather than as they are here which is quite clearly coloured and shiny (thank you, Photoshop Color Dodge Mode!). Basically the idea is that every uniform colour’s black parts are in the shade of the sleeve.
The background lettering I found on a very, very old early tee-shirt design, for the first cartoony Lucy, but I kinda liked it. One of my better graphic design moments. And then the vaguely psychedelic look seemed to chime with the uniform’s vaguely go-go girl look, for a futuristic Austin Powers vibe, heh.
I have to say, whenever i do one like this, it reminds me how much easier it is colouring people with their clothes on. Even a small amount of clothing breaks up the acres of orangey flesh you get with full nudes and it’s much easier to get something approaching eye candy when there’s material that can be textured, and so on. It’s too easy to paint a page full of nudes and have them all come out looking like sculptures in mud, or candle wax.
Anyway, another step closer to the relaunch.
I did the pic itself to mess around with this and that, drawing, colouring etc, hence its deliberately semi-completed status. Then, it sort of looked like a cover pose for a lads magazine like Loaded, Zoo, Nuts etc so I quickly added the lettering just for the shits’n’giggles. I thought the rendering of Lucy had come out rather well, so I thought I should share it with you, kind of thing.
I’ve talked a lot about drawing, but I also find colouring a challenge. I find everything a challenge. Tying my shoelaces is a major success, you know… Anyhoo, part of the problem with drawing erotic stuff is that it needs to be brightly lit so that you can see what’s going on clearly, whereas for comic booky colouring it’s much easier to get dramatic visuals with lots of darkness and shadows. And shiny superhero suits, also. So the two things tend to work in opposition, and I find it a real challenge getting colouring that looks good against, for instance, white backgrounds, and without clothing to break up the acres of pinky-orangey flesh which tend to look kinda monotonous. So this is sort of addressing that, a bit.
Jeez, those folks who say there’s no “art” in porn. If they had any idea the struggles we actually go through…
Apparently. Well, it’s a big ship. We haven’t seen most of it yet…
Following on from the sketch for the promo pic for the relaunch in the post below, I fancied doing something like this. I mithered and dithered a bit about whether the drawing was up to scratch, then when I started colouring it yesterday, it appeared it wasn’t. This often happens, particularly with the faces. They look fine as a drawing, but they won’t colour in in a pleasing manner; the colouring process often reveals to me errors that I can’t see in the drawing. So, I nearly gave up on this one.
My sleep has been messed up for the past few days, and that meant I was up all night, then that triggered a migraine. I don’t usually get much pain (thankfully) but my vision is broken into a kaleidescope for about an hour or more, and this morning that was accompanied by a brain-going-haywire symptom I sometimes have where my brain is sufficiently messed up that I don’t know quite what planet I’m on. It lasts for a short while, but it’s kind of disturbing. Sometimes, I am best going and sitting very quietly, other times it helps to focus on something. And all I really had to focus on this morning was this picture, disappointingly unfinished. So I started fucking around with it. Pretty much at random.
